As part of the efforts by the University of Technology and Applied Sciences–Al Mussanah to enhance students’ effective communication skills, and under the patronage of Dr. Nasser bin Salim Al-Baimani, Assistant Vice Chancellor, the Student Activities Society at the Preparatory Studies Centre organized the English Public Speaking Competition (UTAS-Talks) – Season Three on Monday, 1 December 2025 at the Auditorium.
The competition targets students enrolled in the General Foundation Program, specifically those studying General English (Levels 2 and 3) across all UTAS branches. A total of forty-one students registered for the event, and sixteen contestants were selected from nine different branches to compete for the top positions.
This initiative aims to develop students’ public speaking and presentation skills, boost their self-confidence, and enhance their ability to use English effectively and expressively.
The participants’ speeches covered a wide range of themes, including innovation and technology, personal development and education, society and culture, environment and sustainability, and student life beyond the classroom.
This thematic variety reflected the students’ awareness and engagement with contemporary global and social issues.
The judging panel comprised five English language lecturers from the Preparatory Studies Centres of various UTAS branches.
The judges evaluated the contestants based on clear criteria, including language fluency, organization of ideas, audience impact, and use of body language. The diversity of the judges’ academic backgrounds and expertise contributed to a fair and comprehensive evaluation that accurately reflected the participants’ performance.
At the conclusion of the competition, the top three winners were honored for their excellence in delivery and creativity of content. Winners were: First place for Abbas Muslim Al-Fayrouz (Shinas Branch). Second place for Iyas Mohammed Al-Nasri (Nizwa Branch). Third place for Faisal Hamood Al-Shakili (Rustaq Branch).
The Student Activities Team expressed its sincere appreciation to all organizers, judges, and participants for their efforts in making this event a success—one that truly embodies the spirit of initiative and excellence among UTAS students.
