International Plastic Bag Free Day, celebrated on July 3rd every year, is a day to remind ourselves that every bag that we dispose of, affects the lives of everyone in the world for generations to come. So this weekend when you go shopping remember to carry your eco-friendly smart bags.
Have you ever wondered about the amount of plastic that you use everyday? From bags and wrappers to packets and bottles, plastic is a scourge that seems to have grown to alarming proportions. Plastic pollution is a global catastrophe and sadly it is a man-made one.
Approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used on a global scale that have an extremely detrimental effect on the environment, wildlife and human health. This weekend let's once again reiterate our promise and say no to single use plastic bags that are a threat to our environment because a single plastic bag takes up to 1000 years to decompose as it contains non-renewable petrochemicals.
Keeping this in mind, International Plastic Bag Free Day is celebrated on July 3 every year. It is a global initiative that aims to eliminate the use of plastic bags. Plastic bags may seem like a grocery shopping convenience, but they are also a huge strain on the environment. The day to raise awareness about plastic bags’ ill effects and how to reuse them.
Plastic pollution is largely affecting the marine marine ecosystem and studies have shown that 31 species of marine mammals are known to have ingested marine plastic whilst over 100 species of sea birds have ingested plastic artefacts. Over 250 species have become entangled in plastic. Also plastic particles in the ocean attract toxins, which in turn affects us, as the toxins enter the food chain. So next time you dispose of your single-use plastic bag, remember that they do not pass out of our world, rather they remain anywhere from 100-500 years before finally decaying completely.
