Youngsters introduce computer basics to elderly women in Oman

Muscat: A group of internet newbies in their 50s and 60s are being introduced to the world wide web in Oman.
The women, who had never previously turned on a computer, are being schooled by volunteers in Muscat.
Connecting to the world wide web has been an eye opening experience for them, with volunteers happy to show the basics of email, social media and word processing.
Afraa Al Mamari, a group volunteer, said that during the one-year course, the 40 women are expected to be able to manage their own social media accounts and master basic computer skills.
She added that such programs aim to help older people integrate with society and learn new technologies.
“Younger people live in a different world, and thanks to the big generation gap, seniors face difficulties to understand the new cyber trends,” she said.
It was fun introducing our grandfathers and grandmothers to our “virtual lives”. Al Mamari added.
The volunteers are part of a global campaign to introduce 'silver surfers' - the aged - to the joys of the online world, and to educate them about the perils and pitfalls.
A group of volunteers are teaching 40 delighted elderly people how to use computers and surf the internet.
Every two weeks, women in their 50s and 60s from Al Seeb gather in a classroom to learn basic computer software, like Microsoft Word.
