Muscat: An Omani citizen was arrested at Lahore Airport on Wednesday night for carrying large amounts of foreign currencies.
The 45-year-old Omani citizen was caught by the Pakistan Customs officials at the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore as he was carrying a large amount of UAE dirhams and Omani rials out of the country.
The Allama Iqbal International Airport is the second largest civilian airport in Pakistan, serving Lahore, the capital of Punjab province as well a large number of travellers from other regions of the country.
Customs officials recovered around OMR24,925 and UAE dirham 45,500 from the Omani citizen, according to a source at Lahore Airport.
He was then taken away for further investigation. Pakistani law allows passengers travelling out of Lahore to carry a maximum of $10,000 or equivalent in other currencies.
An Embassy of Pakistan, Muscat official said they were not aware of the incident, which was initially reported by NNI, a local news agency in Pakistan.
According to the news agency, the Omani citizen was travelling on Oman Air flight WY344 to Muscat.
