Health Ministry warns of bacteria contamination in two infant formula products

Muscat: The Ministry of Health calls on "Similac Elecare" and "Junior Elecare’ milk users to stop using it, as it received a notification from the manufacturer about the possibility of contamination with bacteria in the country of origin, USA.

Ministry of Health said in a statement: “The Department of Health would like to inform that it has received notification from the manufacturer regarding reports that the below mentioned infant formula may be contaminated with bacteria in the country of origin, USA.”

 The two products are:

1- Similiac EleCare (0 to 12 months) Similac
2- EleCare Jr (1 year and up)

Product details:

Trade name: "Similac Elecare" and "Junior" Elecare.

It is a specially formulated amino acid based infant formula powder.  The powder is sold in private pharmacies, it is prescribed only with a prescription, and is also used under medical supervision.  Both products are used for nutritional control in cases of protein malabsorption, malabsorption, severe food allergies, short bowel syndrome, acidic digestive disorders, GI upset, or other conditions that require an amino acid-based diet.

These two products are available in Oman in two batch numbers (located on the bottom of the box):

- 30384 Z200 Use for infants from 0 to 12 months for oral or tube feeding.

- 34772 Z201 for one or more ages.  

- Country of Origin/Manufacture: USA

“Therefore, the Department of Health calls on all users of this formula to discontinue use as a precaution.  The Ministry would also like to point out that other products in the local markets are not included in this alert.”
