Muscat: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has sent a cable of congratulations to King Charles III of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Head of the Commonwealth on his coronation as the King of the United Kingdom.
In his cable, His Majesty the Sultan expressed his sincere greetings and wishes of success to King Charles in leading the British people to further progress and prosperity and further development and progress to the relations between the two countries.
King Charles-III was proclaimed as the new monarch of England on Saturday.
People in the Sultanate of Oman mourned the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom with the country flag flying at half-mast public and private sector establishments and in embassies of the Sultanate of Oman on Friday.
The Diwan of Royal Court released a statement saying, “It is with deep grief that His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has received the news of the sad demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.”
Ever since the queen ascended the throne, she remained a judicious leader who contributed immensely to the propagation of love and peace in the entire world throughout her 70-year reign. She was a great friend of the Sultanate and in her death, Oman has lost a global leader deeply committed to its cause.
“The Sultanate of Oman extends its sincere condolences to the British Royal Family and to the people of the United Kingdom,” the release further said.
With cooperation between the nations extending to diverse fields over a period of time, the Oman-Britain relations were further cemented during the tenure of late Queen Elizabeth II.
The strong ties between the two friendly countries received a fillip with the meeting of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle in the County of Berkshire last December. Queen Elizabeth had visited the Sultanate of Oman in 1979 and 2010.
In March 2019, the relations between the two countries saw the signing of the long-standing friendship declaration between the Government of Oman and the Government of the United Kingdom.
Late Queen Elizabeth II, the eldest daughter of King George VI, was born on 21 April 1926, at Bruton Street in London and ascended the throne on 6 February 1952.
The Queen had studied law, history, linguistics, art and music and joined the military service at the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) of the British Army in 1945.
Queen Elizabeth was the sixth woman to ascend the British throne and had the longest term exceeding the term of her grandmother Queen Victoria. She got married on 20 November 1947 to Philip Mountbatten who died in April 2021.
He had had four children with Queen Elizabeth, namely, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.
Queen Elizabeth II was last seen in public on Tuesday when she officially approved the appointment of Liz Truss on the post of the British Prime Minister.
Charles, aged 73, succeeded Queen Elizabeth II and was officially proclaimed as the King of the United Kingdom following the Queen’s demise.
