Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has arrested three people on charges of promoting counterfeit currency in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.
A statement issued online by the ROP said: ”The South Al Sharqiyah Governorate Police Command, in cooperation with the Directorate General of Criminal Inquiries and Investigations, managed to arrest two citizens and a resident of Arab nationality on charges of promoting counterfeit Gulf currency by purchasing supplies from shops.”
The police said that it is completing the legal procedures against them.
Article 175 of the Omani Penal Code stipulates that whoever counterfeits or counterfeits in any way, a banknote or coin legally circulated in the country or in another country, or he/ she forges national public bonds, or promoted any of them knowingly, will be sentenced to prison of no less than 10 years in the event that this results in a fall in the price of the national currency or bonds, or a credit shake-up in the internal or external markets.
