Low risk of Marburg Virus spreading globally at present: WHO
"WHO aims to prevent an outbreak through virus surveillance"

Muscat: The risks of the Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) spreading globally are low at the present time, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean said.

The Organisation is closely following the development of cases of Marburg Virus Disease in the WHO African Region. It is also working closely with affected countries to combat this disease.

Dr. Ahmed bin Salim Al Mandhari, Regional Director of WHO for the Eastern Mediterranean, said that 2023 witnessed an outbreak of Marburg virus disease in the Federal Republics of Tanzania and Equatorial Guinea. The risks of the disease spreading at the global level are considered low at the present time.

He added: "WHO aims to prevent an outbreak through virus surveillance, and support countries at risk to develop preparedness plans."

In addition, Dr. Al Mandhari said: "The Organisation is committed to facing this new health challenge, and continues to work closely with affected countries and international partners to limit the spread of the disease and protect public health," Al Mandhari added.
