Commerce ministry approves electricity measuring devices

Muscat: The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion has taken the initiative of introducing the approval of electricity measurement devices by signing the cooperation framework with the Authority for Public Services Regulation and Distribution Rules Council.

The initiative taken by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion  aimed to boost marketing and industry  of the measurement devices with the requirements of Omani Standard (OS1648) on pre-paid electricity meter systems  and (OS1647) on electricity meter systems.

It also aims to enhance national basic structure of quality, which will support the local economy and contribute to elimination of technical challenges and lead to inflow of goods through exchange of trade.  

The cooperation framework aims to assign the Distribution Rules Council with the review of the documents related to the application for the type of electricity meter in agreement with the Directorate General of Specifications and Measurements.

Faiza bint Hamad Al Mashafi, Director of the National Measurement and Calibration Centre at the  Directorate General of Specifications and Measurements at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion said that the type of electricity meter approved is based on the standard specification and the technical requirements set forth in the Omani standard specifications of electricity meters, issued by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion and the technical criteria for the power measurement systems and the approved standards in the electricity sector.

She said that the application for the type of electricity meter is an application submitted by the party supplying the electricity meters or the manufacturer

She said that the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion issued in May 2022, Ministerial Decision No. 393/2022 on the Omni Standard (OS1648) on the prepaid electricity meters systems and OS1647 on the electricity meters.
