Muscat: They come from diverse backgrounds — doctors, engineers, chartered accountants, sales executives, and IT professionals — but share a common passion of cycling.
The group of Indian expatriates have been passionately following cycling as a hobby and on Tuesday marked the 77th Indian Independence Day with a 77km cycle trip.
Donning the Indian blue colours, a total of 20 cyclists took to Muscat streets early in the morning to ride the distance.
The cycling group, which also involved families, began their hobby in 2016, and today the fraternity boasts of a good number of enthusiasts.
They are from young to old in the group (25 to 65 years) and from varied professions.
Speaking to Times of Oman, one of the members said: “This is a fantastic support group with each one encouraging the other to push oneself to beat their own benchmarks.”
He added: “The group has been undertaking special cycle rides on the occasion of the Indian Independence Day and Oman National Day for the past four years. We established as a group in 2016, but we started to ride on these two historic days of India and Oman over the past four years and have increased the distance every year.”
This year, the Independence Day route took the riders from Ruwi to Al Mouj and back to the starting point in Ruwi.
The riders took a break at Al Mouj for tea and photographs. Few of the group members joined from Al Khuwair, Azaiba and other places until Al Mouj; taking it upon themselves to complete the stipulated 77 kms. Another rider told Times of Oman, “This is an initiative that we hope to continue as an annual tradition. We hope that one day, riders will be riding all the way to Sohar and back.”
