#OmanPride: Designer reveals secrets of Oman Post’s jubilee stamps

Muscat: Oman Post has issued six new commemorative stamps to mark the golden jubilee of the Sultanate’s postal services.
At a cost of 250 baisas for each stamp, people can purchase the special edition at an Oman Post office in Ruwi near the Omantel tower.
In an exclusive interview, the designer of the stamps revealed that his collection reflects five decades of the history of Oman’s postal services.
Celebrating five decades of postal services’ independence, the first stamp displays a red metallic post box, which people in the 60s used to drop their mails into.
“Oman amended the boxes’ design in the 80s to make it look more like the Omani dagger (Khanjar), while changing its material to plastic and the colour from red to yellow,” the Omani designer explained.

It is worth mentioning that blue is the current colour of Oman’s mail boxes, which was set in 2006, when the service was boarded from the government and became a company, according to the designer, who is also a stamp collector.
Another stamp includes images of three mini Omani stamps, each representing a significant period of the country’s postal history.
With its rare colour combination, the first mini stamp represents a historic period when the country had the name ‘Sultanate of Muscat and Oman,’ while the second has the old name stroked and replaced with ‘Sultanate of Oman.’
The collection also includes a stamp with a seal from April 30, 1966, which is evidence that it was one of the oldest Omani stamps ever. The prestigious collection comes with a paper frame that displays old parts of Muttrah and a stamp in the background of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
The frame’s background was created by Jumaa Al Harthi, an Oman Post designer.
