Heavy Rainfall warning issued for several parts of Oman

Muscat: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued a heavy rainfall alert (Alert 1) for several regions across Oman, effective from Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 4:00 AM until Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 4:00 AM. The warning comes in light of anticipated heavy thunderstorms expected to gradually develop from Monday evening and persist through Wednesday due to the effects of a tropical system.

The affected areas include the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta, and Dhofar, extending to parts of Muscat, North Al Sharqiyah, Al Dakhiliyah, South Al Batinah, North Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah, and Al Buraimi. Rainfall amounts are predicted to range between 30-80 mm, with strong downdrafts, hail, and a high potential for flash floods in wadis (valleys).

The CAA advises residents to avoid crossing wadis, stay clear of low-lying areas, and refrain from sailing during the alert period. Additional warnings include:

* Heavy thunderstorms with hail are expected, bringing 30-80 mm rainfall, potentially causing flash floods.
* Due to downdrafts, strong winds with speeds of 28-64 km/h (15-35 knots) are forecasted.
* Sea conditions may worsen, with wave heights along most of the Oman Sea coast expected to rise between 1.5 and 3 meters.
* Visibility may be significantly reduced during thunderstorms.

The alert also mentioned that updates will be provided in 24 hours if necessary. Citizens are urged to stay informed and follow safety precautions.
