Muscat: The road network in the Sultanate of Oman has seen remarkable growth under the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.
A wide network of modern highways have been built in accordance with the latest international technical specifications.
Yousef Abdullah Al Mejaini, Director General of Roads and Land Transport at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said that there are many projects within the current five-year plans that the ministry plans to execute in 2025.
He said the construction of roads is of economic, tourism and logistics significance as they help in achieving economic diversification.
He said that in coordination with the Tender Board, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology awarded in 2024 a number of road projects covering all governorates of the Sultanate at the cost of over OMR300 million.
The key projects awarded included three packages of Dualisation of Sultan Said bin Taimur (Adam–Thumrait) Road Project from the Wilayat of Haima to the Wilayat of Thumrait.
This project includes construction of a dual road with all means of traffic safety such as the steel barricades and box-culverts, he said, adding that the project has been awarded to three contractors and the works of the project are expected to commence during the first quarter of the current year.
The ministry is also proceeding with the balance works of Sultan Taimur bin Faisal (Al Batinah Coastal ) Road Project, the construction works of which are progressing as scheduled.
Speaking on Sultan Faisal bin Turki Road Project (Dibba-Lima-Khasab) in Musandam Governorate, he said that this project is one of the key strategic projects executed by the ministry.
The completion percentage of this project is 27% approximately with all service roads opened for traffic.
On the balance works of Sultan Turki bin Said Road ( Al Sharqiyah Expressway), he said that the completion percentage amounted to nearly 20%, while the design works of Wadi Bani Khalid Road will be finished in six months.
He said that the completion percentage of the road linking Sultan Qaboos bin Said Road ( Al Batinah Main Road) with Al Batinah Expressway amounted to 90% and all packages of the road links of the project are expected to be complete during the second or last quarter of the year.
The length of the paved roads amounted to 16,000 kms by end of 2024 and 17,000 kms are yet to be completed, he added-
