Over 1,000 runners likely to take part in Oman Desert Marathon

Bidiyah: The first stage of the 10th edition of Oman Desert Marathon kicked off yesterday in the Wilayat of Bidiyah, North Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

The event will continue till 22 January with the participation of over 1,000 runners and open races runners from different countries.

The kickoff of the first stage of the marathon was organised under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Faris bin Fatik Al Said.

 The opening event of the 42 –km first stage of the marathon coincided with the start of the short races for 2, 5, 10 and 21 kms designated for families and children of different age, saw heritage and sports celebrations.

Said Mohamed Al Hajri, General Supervisor of Oman Desert Marathon said that the marathon of this year came following the success of the former editions of Oman Desert Marathon, which saw participation of a big number of champions of races from other countries.

He said that the event receives the attention and care of the media and the sports arena as it promotes tourism in the Sultanate of Oman and the participation of racers of different age groups and nationalities.

He said that the marathon of this year has organised in cooperation and partnership with a number of government and private sector establishments.

The marathon comprises four stages for 165 kilometres. The first stage is four 42 kilometres, the second for 55 kilometres, the third stage for 47 kilometres and the fourth and last stage is for 21 kilometres, in addition to the walking race for 100 kilometres, he said.
