Muscat: The third international conference titled “International Humanitarian Law in View of Islamic Jurisprudence” kicked off at Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre on Monday.
Representatives of 20 countries are taking part in the 3-day conference organised by the College of Sharia Sciences from 17 to 19 February.
The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Sheikh Abdulmalik Abdullah Al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council. The event is attended by ministers, senior state officials and other international guests.
The conference aims to explore the relationship between international humanitarian law and the principles of Islamic jurisprudence (law), with special emphasis on issues related to armed conflicts and the protection of human rights in times of war.
As many as 167 abstracts, in addition to 90 research papers, will be presented by researchers from Oman and abroad.
The conference explores the role of Islamic jurisprudence in promoting international peace and preserving the rights of victims of armed conflicts. It also looks into the basic principles of international humanitarian law and options to activate them in the legal context. In this context, the conference will highlight the efforts of Muslim scholars in developing a theoretical framework for these rules, with the prime aim of diminishing the impacts of wars on individuals and societies.
The conference will elaborate on four aspects within the context of international law and jurisprudence, namely the protection of victims of armed conflicts; legitimate methods of combat; mechanisms for establishing criminal responsibility at individual and international levels; and the contributions of Ibadi jurisprudence to the rules governing armed conflicts.
The conference will see the participation of representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross, government departments, researchers and academics specialized in international humanitarian law and Islamic jurisprudence.
The conference focuses on the importance of integrating Islamic law in addressing contemporary challenges related to armed conflicts. This approach seeks to enhance awareness about the importance of international humanitarian law in accommodating the rights of all individuals in times of war. It will also reflect the interaction between the Islamic law and international law.
The first and second editions of this conferences were organized by the College of Sharia Sciences in 2018 and 2023.
