OHRC participates in conference on Human Rights from an Islamic Perspective

Muscat: Oman Human Rights Commission, led by its Chair Professor Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi, participated in the First International Conference on Human Rights from an Eastern Perspective, held in Tehran and Qom, Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Conference was organised by Baqir al-Olum University in cooperation with the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization under Iran’s Ministry of Culture. It brought together a wide range of participants, including representatives from national human rights institutions, regional and international organizations, as well as researchers and academics with expertise in the field.

The Conference aimed to present a comprehensive Eastern perspective on human rights, one that draws on the rich cultural and civilizational heritage of Islamic and Eastern traditions. It also sought to highlight values and principles from various Eastern civilizations as an alternative to dominant Western approaches in human rights discourse.

Discussions at the Conference focused on the need for an Eastern approach to human rights, particularly in light of ongoing global challenges and crises, most notably, the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories. The Conference also explored historical and cultural experiences across different countries, the potential for greater regional cooperation, and evolving concepts of human rights from an Eastern viewpoint, including their philosophical, cultural, and social foundations.

Professor Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi, Chair of the Oman Human Rights Commission, presented a scholarly paper at the Conference. His presentation addressed the importance and necessity of convening a human rights conference from an Eastern perspective, especially in light of the prevailing global challenges and crises. He also highlighted Oman’s historical and cultural experience in the field of human rights.

The Commission’s delegation also included Plenipotentiary Minister Aqil bin Alawi Ba Omar, a member of the Commission, and Hassan bin Ahmed Al-Ajmi from the Commission’s Technical Secretariat.
