MUSCAT: Tomorrow, Oman will join its fellow Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations in celebrating the 44th anniversary of the council’s establishment on May 25, 1981—a milestone marking the journey towards deeper integration among its six member states across various sectors, reinforcing common interests and fulfilling aspirations for stability, prosperity, and development.

His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik reaffirmed Oman’s unwavering support for the GCC in his Royal Speech upon assuming power on January 11, 2020, stating: "We will continue, alongside our brothers, the leaders of the GCC countries, to contribute to advancing cooperation among our nations, achieving the aspirations of our peoples, and pushing forward the council’s accomplishments." Oman remains steadfast in its commitment to the council’s principles and objectives, actively shaping its decisions and initiatives while supporting economic integration, coordinating political stances, and strengthening cultural and social cooperation.

This dedication stems from Oman’s belief that the council’s cohesion is key to the region’s resilience amid rapid global transformations. Speaking to Oman News Agency (ONA), Sheikh Ahmed bin Hashel Al-Maskari, Head of the GCC and Regional Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign, emphasized the historic significance of the council’s founding, describing it as a pivotal moment for Arab cooperation. Since its inception, the GCC has made notable strides in fostering coordination and integration among its members, leveraging their shared history and common interests.

 Key Achievements & Challenges

Among the GCC’s major political accomplishments is unifying member states’ stances in international forums and reinforcing regional peace and stability. Economically, the Customs Union, Gulf Common Market, electricity grid interconnection, and transport projects stand as significant institutional successes.

Despite these advancements, Al-Maskari acknowledged that the council has encountered challenges, including differences in political perspectives, economic uncertainties, and fast-changing regional dynamics. However, he stressed that the council’s mechanisms for dialogue and consultation have helped overcome many obstacles with responsibility and wisdom.

Looking ahead, the GCC’s ambitious vision demands accelerated implementation across various sectors—particularly in economic, social, and legislative integration—as the council remains a dynamic entity reflecting member states’ political will to enhance unity and cooperation.

 GCC’s Role in Regional Stability

Al-Maskari highlighted the GCC’s central role in collective security, addressing threats, and promoting peaceful resolutions for regional crises. He emphasized its strategic partnerships with international powers and regional actors, ensuring a balance of interests and protecting Gulf security.

The GCC follows a responsible foreign policy, respecting international law and non-interference in sovereign affairs. Its diplomatic contributions include mediation efforts and support for conflict resolution, particularly advocating for Palestine’s cause and opposing foreign interventions in the region.

Oman’s Influence in GCC Diplomacy Renowned for its balanced foreign policy, Oman has consistently worked to bridge divides and strengthen Gulf unity, reaffirming its dedication to supporting the GCC’s progress at all stages. It actively encourages initiatives fostering regional cooperation, particularly in matters requiring consensus and careful deliberation.

Looking to the future, Al-Maskari emphasised that the GCC must adapt to global shifts through modernised mechanisms, enhanced integration tools, and unified policies—especially in areas such as cybersecurity, climate change, and sustainable development. He stressed the need for an integrated economic framework to ensure security and prosperity for GCC citizens.

Future Gulf Integration in Key Sectors
Al-Maskari identified digital economy, food security, and renewable energy as top priorities in Gulf collaboration. These areas are expected to witness significant advancements through joint strategies and innovative initiatives.

He concluded by reaffirming Oman's commitment to Gulf unity, emphasizing that cohesion and shared destiny remain the foundation for regional security, stability, and development—a vision Oman is devoted to realising alongside its GCC counterparts.
