Liwa: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources continues construction work on the Al-Zahimi flood protection dam project in the Wilayat of Liwa, North Al Batinah Governorate.
The project, which began on 24 April 2025, is expected to be completed by 24 February 2027, with a construction cost exceeding RO 9 million. As of the end of July, the project's completion rate has reached 19%.
Eng. Nasser Mohammed Al Battashi, Director General of Water Resources Assessment at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the Al-Zahimi flood protection dam aims to safeguard flood-prone areas downstream in the Wilayats of Liwa and Shinas, which are often directly affected by seasonal cyclones and accompanying floods, leading to severe loss of life and property.
He explained that the project will enhance groundwater recharge in the region, supporting water resource sustainability and improving efficiency in water usage across various sectors, particularly agriculture.
Al Battashi added that once completed, the dam will supply groundwater to several villages and is expected to improve living conditions in these areas by mitigating flood impacts, ensuring sustainable groundwater utilization, and boosting agricultural activity.
He noted that the project will reduce flood risks in residential and agricultural areas downstream, improve groundwater recharge rates, and provide a supplementary water resource during droughts, in addition to enhancing agricultural production through stabilized water resources.
The Director General emphasized that the Al-Zahimi flood protection dam is one of the strategic solutions to address increasing climate challenges, reflecting the commitment of relevant authorities to balancing environmental protection and sustainable development, with work progressing according to the specified timelines.
