Strict rules announced for carrying spare batteries on SalamAir Flights

Muscat: To ensure the safety of all passengers and crew, SalamAir is implementing new and strict restrictions on the carriage and use of spare batteries (power banks) on board all flights, effective October 1, 2025.

This change comes in response to growing concerns about lithium battery incidents, such as fires caused by power banks known to be prone to thermal runaway. As of the effective date, the use of any spare batteries or power banks on board is prohibited.

Passengers are permitted to carry spare batteries subject to strict safety rules. Any permitted spare batteries must be turned off during the entire flight, and they must not be used to charge any device or be charged themselves while on board. For storage, these items must be placed either in the seat pocket directly in front of you or stored under your seat.

Regarding capacity, a passenger may carry one spare battery with a capacity of less than 100 watt-hours without prior approval, provided it adheres to the safety rules mentioned above. Power banks with a capacity between 100 watt-hours and 160 watt-hours are considered restricted and are only permitted with prior official approval from SalamAir, while still being subject to the same onboard restrictions. Finally, power banks with a capacity exceeding 160 watt-hours are strictly prohibited and are not permitted on any SalamAir flight.
