Oman launches initiative to expand comprehensive Ethical AI Governance

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman on Wednesday launched the initiative to expand the scope of the comprehensive, rights-based Ethical AI Governance framework (RAM), which represents the first global standard document for the ethical implementation, development, and use of artificial intelligence based on human rights.

This took place during the workshop on expanding the scope of comprehensive, rights-based Ethical AI Governance, organised by the Ministry of Education, represented by the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, over two days. The workshop was held in cooperation with the UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen in Doha, and in partnership with the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.

The workshop, inaugurated by Jokha Abdullah Al Shukaili, CEO of Oman Authority for Academic Accreditation and Educational Quality Assurance, targets specialists and professionals working in AI systems from both the public and private sectors, as well as members of Oman Human Rights Commission.

UNESCO has selected Oman as one of the beneficiary countries for the experience of implementing the AI Management System (RAM), within the framework of the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.

The workshop aims to discuss the mechanism for preparing national regulatory frameworks that govern the use of AI systems in institutional work, the challenges facing relevant authorities in developing these regulations, and the consideration of legal, social, cultural, scientific, and economic dimensions when formulating these frameworks.
