Al-Mashash Heritage and Tourism Forum showcases Dhofar's desert gems

Muscat: The Al-Mashash Heritage and Tourism Forum successfully concluded a diverse array of events in the Al-Mashash district of the Wilayat of Maqshan, Dhofar Governorate. The forum aimed to showcase the region's rich cultural heritage, unique natural attractions, and bolster the winter tourism season in Dhofar. The festivities began with the arrival of a tourist convoy from Salalah, followed by traditional performances and the exhilarating "Sand Challenge" competition, drawing adventure enthusiasts from across Oman.

Promoting Heritage and Economic Growth

Organized through a cooperative effort between the General Directorate of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar and the Office of the Wali of Maqshan, the forum is central to efforts promoting domestic tourism in the desert regions, particularly the Empty Quarter. The initiative seeks to open new economic and social opportunities for local communities by highlighting the natural beauty, arts, and traditional crafts inherent to the Bedouin environment. The forum also coincided with Oman’s National Day celebrations, adding a celebratory dimension to the events.

Infrastructure Development and International Interest

Mohammed bin Amer Jadad, Deputy Wali of Maqshan, highlighted the government's commitment to developing the desert regions. He specifically noted a project to construct 170 kilometers of internal roads in Maqshan, designed to connect its districts and surrounding areas to enhance social stability, economic growth, and tourism activity. Marwan bin Abdulhakim Al-Ghassani, Director of Tourism Promotion, added that Maqshan is now a recognized destination for tour operators, noting increasing interest from international tourists across Europe, Asia, and the United States.

Activities and Community Engagement

The forum’s comprehensive activities underscored its commitment to community and culture. Highlights included the official opening of the Al-Mashash Quran Memorization Center and a crafts and student exhibition that celebrated the skills of local artisans and youth creativity in traditional desert industries. Furthermore, the two-day "Sand Challenge" for four-wheel drive vehicles provided a competitive atmosphere, alongside various live performances, artistic, and poetic evenings that beautifully embodied the cultural and heritage aspects of the Bedouin environment.
