Rehabilitation of Raysut Fishing Port boosts investment opportunities

Salalah: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is continuing its efforts to develop the infrastructure of fishery harbours in Dhofar Governorate by executing the rehabilitation project of the Raysut Fishing Port, located in the Wilayat of Salalah.

The project, costing over OMR2.9 million, comes within the Ministry's plans aimed at raising port efficiency and enhancing their contribution to supporting the fisheries sector and the local economy.

The project is considered one of the vital initiatives designed to improve the harbour's operational environment and provide an advanced infrastructure that meets the needs of fishermen and maritime traffic. It included the construction of a new 610-metre breakwater to provide the necessary protection for the harbour basin from sand sedimentation and the impact of marine currents and high waves, alongside the execution of a 250-metrr marine groyne to mitigate sand and silt encroachment and improve water movement inside the harbour.

The project also included the reclamation of an area estimated at 34,000 square metres to be utilised for future expansions and service facilities, the construction of a 70-metre fixed wharf to facilitate the berthing of artisanal fishing vessels and the handling of fish and goods, as well as the creation of a boat slipway to serve landing and maintenance operations.

Eng. Mohammed Abdullah Al Rashidi, the Project Manager, stated that the completion rate of the Raysut Fishing Port rehabilitation project has reached 100 percent. He noted that it comes within the Ministry's continuous efforts to develop fishery harbors and raise their operational efficiency to keep pace with the rapid growth in the fisheries sector, pointing out that the project contributes to boosting fishing activity in the Wilayat of Salalah and providing a safe and integrated working environment for fishermen.

In a statement to Oman News Agency, he explained that the project also featured the execution of 1,000-metre-long internal roads equipped with lighting to improve traffic movement within the harbour and enhance safety, in addition to installing an integrated surveillance camera system to bolster security aspects and monitor operational activities within the harbor boundaries.

He added that the executed works will help mitigate sand accumulation inside the harbour basin, improve its operational readiness, and accommodate the movement of boats and vessels more efficiently. Furthermore, it prepares the harbor for future expansions and services that support the sustainability of the fisheries sector in the governorate, noting that fish production in the Wilayat of Salalah for the year 2025 reached 14,059 tonnes, with a value of OMR9.2 million.

He pointed out that the project also involved reclaiming a new plot of land estimated at 34,000 square metres to utilise for future expansions and to establish service and investment facilities associated with the fisheries sector. This enhances the economic value of the harbor and supports the strategy of developing fishery harbors as developmental and logistical hubs that contribute to stimulating economic activity and providing promising employment and investment opportunities.
