Oman signs a scientific agreement with CERN

Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Education, on Tuesday signed a scientific and technical cooperation agreement with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) at the organisation’s headquarters in Geneva, in a step that enhances the presence of the Sultanate of Oman in the international scientific research system.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the Omani side by Ambassador Mahmoud Hamad Al Hasani, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the Swiss Confederation, and on behalf of the organisation by Professor Mark Thomson, Director-General of the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

The agreement establishes a framework for joint cooperation in the field of high-energy physics, including the exchange of scientific personnel, knowledge and equipment, and opening the way for Omani scientists, engineers and students to join the organisation’s research and training programs in experimental and theoretical physics, accelerator engineering, computing, artificial intelligence, information security and advanced materials science.

The Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the Swiss Confederation affirmed that this partnership embodies a clear direction under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik towards building a knowledge economy, noting that the agreement opens the doors of cooperation for Omani cadres with one of the most prestigious research centers in the world.

The agreement is valid for five years and is automatically renewable. It establishes a mechanism for concluding detailed protocols with scientific and university institutions in the Sultanate of Oman, enabling the translation of cooperation into actual, measurable research projects.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is one of the world’s leading scientific research centers, with 23 member states, and many other countries cooperate with it under similar agreements.
