Jeddah: Oman’s national football team advanced to the semi-finals of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup after defeating Kuwait 3-1 at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City Stadium in the final round of Group A.
Kuwait took an early lead through Shabeeb Al-Khaldi in the sixth minute, with Oman trailing 1-0 at halftime despite creating several opportunities.
Oman came out strongly after the break and equalised in the 65th minute through Nasser Al-Rawahi, who converted a cross from Jamil Al-Yahmedi.
Al-Rawahi struck again in the 80th minute to put Oman ahead before Musab Al-Shaqsi completed the comeback five minutes later with a powerful header.
The victory lifted Oman to four points and secured the second qualification spot from Group A on goal difference, with Iraq also finishing on four points. Saudi Arabia topped the group with nine points after defeating Iraq 2-0.
Oman coach Tarik Sektioui said the match was difficult, particularly because the team needed to score several goals to strengthen its qualification chances. He noted that the players improved their performance in the second half and successfully implemented the tactical approach agreed upon during the break.
Sektioui thanked the players for their efforts throughout the tournament, saying the technical staff had worked to improve their physical and mental readiness despite the challenges faced at the start of the campaign.
He added that the technical staff remained committed to developing Omani football and that his selection of players was based on confidence in their abilities and performances.
