Fuel price revision not of much help, feel expats in Oman

Muscat: People in Oman are in two minds regarding the revised petrol and diesel prices. Many feel that the move might not lead to many changes in the market.
Oman’s government on Thursday announced revised fuel prices, which will be effective from February 1.
Super grade petrol will now cost 153 baisas per litre, regular grade petrol 137 baisas and 146 baisas for diesel per litre, an official Twitter post by the Ministry of Oil and Gas revealed.
“This is not a big drop so nothing will change,” Abdullah, a resident said.
“It’s good, even though it’s a marginal difference, but it helps us save some sort of money, says Prakash Chandran, an Indian expat, who has been living in Oman for the past 13 years.
“It was a huge hike from 120 to 160 baisas some days back; now it’s getting down by a small margin and I hope the rates will come down more in the coming days, said Sreejith Kannan.
“It is far better than 160 baisas, and hope the government will decrease the price more in the coming days,” Munawar said.
“We can save some baisas when we go for a full tank refuelling, otherwise there is not much difference,” said Kabeer Ahmed, also an expat.
This is the second adjustment in fuel prices since they were deregulated. The first price revision was made on January 15.
At that time, the price for super grade petrol was fixed at 160 baisas, 140 baisas for regular grade petrol and 160 baisas for diesel.
Fuel prices dropped as global oil prices plunged due to oversupply and weak demand. From $115 per barrel in June 2014, oil prices have dropped to less than $30 per barrel in recent times.
