Muscat: A semi-classical music concert by noted Indian singer Padma Shri Dr Soma Ghosh will be held at the Al Bustan Palace Auditorium today.
The event is being held as part of the Festival of India in Oman, organised by the Indian Embassy in Muscat.
Her troupe will also perform at Sohar, Sur and Salalah after the concert in Muscat, besides performing on January 26 at a reception being hosted by the Indian Embassy to celebrate the 68th Republic Day of India.
Dr Soma Ghosh is a well-known vocalist from Banaras Gharana and has the distinction of being the first ever woman to sing in India’s Parliament.
She’s an adopted daughter and protégé of legendary shehnai player, Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan. She has been conferred withPadma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards of India.
During her performances in Oman, Dr. Ghosh will be presenting the purest form of Banaras Gharana music genres, besides ghazals, sufiana songs, semi classical songs as well as Bollywood film songs.
Accompanied by a talented dancer, she will recreate scenes that would typify the traditional Indian ‘durbars’- the Royal Court Mehfils of the Mughals.
“The Festival of India in Oman, is being organised with a view to present to the people of Oman the lesser known facets of India’s rich and diverse culture It will continue to delight Oman in future with a performance by an Indian folk dance group from Jammu & Kashmir which will visit Oman during 10-14 February 2017. This will be followed by an Indian Food Festival and an Indian Fashion Show which will be held in March 2017,” according to Indian Embassy in Muscat.
The first ever ‘Festival of India in Oman’ is being organised by the embassy with support from the Ministry of Culture of India and in association with the Ministry of Heritage and Culture of the Sultanate of Oman from November 2016 to March 2017.
