Muscat: Engineer Bahiah Al-Shoaibi became the only Arab woman to receive a scholarship from the International Space University, and she’s an Omani.
Al Shoaibi received the scholarship from the International Space University (ISU) after competing with a number of international candidates.
The course to be held in Australia will last for five weeks.
Al Shoaibi, the only Omani and Arab woman participating in this course, has had a passion for space science since childhood.
She started reading books on space science when she was a student. Al Shoaibi has a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and a Master’s degree in Mobile Telecommunication and Satellites Technology from the UK. She is currently working in Omantel as a Telecommunication Project Engineer. Al Shoaibi has participated in various local and international events. She invented a device to reduce the impact of sunlight on the frequencies of communication systems.
The invention received the top honour at the Omantel Talents Competition for Innovation in 2012, a feat she repeated in 201 edition of the contest.
“I am very proud of Omantel’s support and the opportunity to participate in this programme. A number of specialists from different parts of the world will be participating and it will be an opportunity to enhance my knowledge and exchange ideas and experiences. I will do my best to share and use such knowledge to serve my country,” Al Shoaibi said.
