Muscat: A 109 km stretch of the new Sinaw-Mahoot-Duqm road project was officially opened yesterday by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
The newly completed portion of the project represents 60 percent of the total length of the route, which is 181 km.
The project includes a single carriageway with 3.75m wide lane, 2.5m asphalt external shoulders and 2m non asphalt external shoulders. The project also includes the construction of seven roundabouts, of which five are in the first section and two in the second.
Two hundred box culverts (rain drainage) have also been constructed along the road. The project design features the required traffic safety means in the two sections, such as road floor paintings, iron fences near the box culverts and high embankments as well floor reflectors and lighting along a 40 km stretch.
The Sinaw-Mahoot-Duqm road project is considered one of the major projects in Oman, and will help link the Duqm economic zone to the Governorates of Dakhlya, north of Sharqya as well the capital city of Muscat.
This vital road will result in many direct benefits for those who live in the areas through which it crosses, and will also contribute in revitalizing tourism, socio-economic aspects and commerce in the country.
It will also serve the main villages in the area like Al Ayon, Burzzman , Al Shreekha, Al Madeera and Willayat of Mahoot.
The project will support the Duqm economic zone development plans and will attract investment as well encourage commerce and industry in Duqm, that has a port.
The port is considered a hub for developing the area which has the potential to accommodate millions of containers anda capacity for handling general cargo, dry bulk and liquid materials. The route will also be a factor in boosting tourism, industrial and commercial activities, in accordance with the plans of the Duqm Special Economic Zone Authority.
