Muscat: Shell’s Global Road Safety Leadership team met in Muscat to discuss strategies for road safety awareness in the country.
During the meeting, the team highlighted positive developments on road safety in Oman, led by Royal Oman Police (ROP) efforts and supported by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).
“We share our road safety experience and knowledge proactively with other companies, the government, non-governmental organisations and local communities,” said Chris Breeze, Shell’s Country Chairman in Oman.
Shell has played a role in establishing and supporting Oman’s first public association dedicated to Road Safety, The Oman Road Safety Association (ORSA).
A representative explained their dedication to community road safety,“They have organised a number of initiatives that focus on all individuals in society, including children, parents, teachers, students and bus drivers, aim to make road safety a way of life.”
“With our joint-venture partners, we engage on a number of initiatives that tackle the challenges in road safety, and that help raise awareness amongst community members,” Breeze explained.
Past initiatives include “The Annual Road Safety Conference”, and its theme was “Stay Alert, Stay Safe.” Topics discussed include Shell’s road transport performance, holistic approaches to road safety, driver welfare, and care for the community.
Attendees included employees from Shell; Health, Safety, and Environment professionals; representatives from PDO, Oman LNG and ROP, Shell Oman Marketing, as well as Shell’s Global Road Safety Leadership team.
Upcoming initiatives for road safety awareness involve an workshop during ‘GCC Traffic Week’, which will be presented by Bernd Marx, Shell Group’s General Manager for Road Safety. The ROP co-organised workshop will focus on road safety behaviors, and Shell’s journey towards ensuring safer roads and mobility.
Shell will also launch a campaign for the Fourth United Nations Global Road Safety Week, from 8th to 14th of May. The campaign, titled Save Lives - #SlowDown, aims to address speed management and what can be done to address this key risk factor for road traffic deaths and injuries.
