Sultan Qaboos University inks pact with UN Green Climate Fund

Muscat: Represented by the Environmental Studies and Research Center in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU)signed an agreement with the United Nations Green Climate Fund (UNGCF) to implement the "Readiness Project" which seeks to implement a range of programmes to address the effects of climate change, mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
The project aims to mitigate the risks of future climate change and to participate in international efforts to reduce emissions within the frameworks and mechanisms of international conventions.
The Sultanate is the first Arab country in Asia to sign such a significant agreement with the Fund.
Sultan Qaboos University is one of the first universities in the world that has been accredited by the Fund to implement such projects.
The project seeks to strengthen and build national institutional capacity to deal with climate change and disaster response issues, especially after the Sultanate's commitment to the Paris Climate Change Conference in 2015 to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions within national assessed contributions.
The Green Climate Fund was established in 2010 by the signatories to the Framework Convention on Climate Change and aims to encourage member states to make a paradigm shift towards low-emission development paths capable of adapting to climate change.
