Gulf country offers amnesty to illegal expat workers

Muscat: Illegal expat workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) can now leave the country without paying any fines as part of an amnesty campaign, the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship in UAE has announced.
According to officials the campaign starts on August 1, 2018 and will run for three months until October 31.
Authorities said that the "'Protect Yourself by Changing Your Status’ initiative includes all violators [and starts on] August 1. [It also] includes an exemption from penalties and [people can] leave the country without a ban”. Officials also added that “there was a possibility of returning with a new visa”.
In a statement online officials said, "This is a valuable opportunity for any violator in the country to change their status and benefit from the complete amnesty from all fines and legal consequences resulting from the infringement.”
