Muscat: Tropical Storm Luban has now deepened into a Category 1 Tropical Cyclone, the Public Authority for Civil Aviation said in its second storm warning.
Luban is likely to develop to a Category 2 cyclone within the next 48 hours, the authority added.
PACA's report said, "The latest weather charts and satellite images of the National Multi-Hazard and Early Warning Centre indicate the development of tropical storm Luban to a Category 1 tropical cyclone. centered in the southwest of the Arabian sea. The cyclone is around 700 km away from Salalah city, with surface wind speeds of 64 to 74 knots (119 to 137 kmph).
"The tropical storm continues to move west by northwest towards Dhofar governorate coast and Yemen, with the tropical storm likely to deepen into a tropical cyclone of the second degree within the next 48 hours."
By Saturday evening, Dhofar and Al Wusta governorates are expected to be affected by heavy rain and high winds, with sea waves reaching maximum heights of 6 to 8 metres.
