​Shop fined for illegally selling chewing tobacco in Oman

Muscat: A commercial establishment in Nizwa was fined OMR1,000 for selling tobacco illegally, the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) has announced.

Authorities revealed that the tobacco was found during a field visit in the area.

According to PACP’s statement, "During a field visit to commercial establishments in the area, officials from the Public Authority found bags of chewing tobacco (Afdhal and Rajaklax) in a convenience store. The tobacco was immediately confiscated and the establishment was fined OMR1,000 as per Order 301/2016, regarding the ban on the distribution of chewing tobacco."

The order states that any establishment found selling chewing tobacco is to be fined OMR1,000, with an addition of OMR50 for every day that the fine is not paid up to a total of OMR2,000. The seized tobacco is also to be confiscated and destroyed.

PACP has called for all retailers and suppliers to comply with its regulations.
