Canberra: Bomb experts in Australia have destroyed explosive materials found in a suburban Adelaide garden shed following the arrest of a 43-year-old man.
South Australia (SA) Police confirmed that a highly volatile substance had been safely detonated at an address in Davoren Park. Four controlled detonations were conducted, with some neighbouring streets cordoned off by police.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Craig Patterson said it was not believed to be a terror-related incident.
"The investigation will continue to see what the motives are, but at this time there is no evidence to suggest that this is a terrorist related incident,” he said.
According to authorities, a highly volatile substance was found in a container (freezer) in a shed at the Heytesbury Road property during a police search.
SA Police Bomb Response Unit experts went to the address and assessed the substance, which is known to be highly unstable and volatile if not handled appropriately by experts. Experts were onhand to plan the safe detonation of the substance.
“At all times the safety of the public and the emergency services responding to the incident was paramount,” acting Assistant Commissioner Patterson said.
Police warned that the detonation of the material could cause some noise and vibrations, with neighbours warned to stay away from windows. No fire or release of noxious gas was expected to result of the detonation.
A resident from the property, a man aged 43, has appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with manufacturing explosives and possession of an explosive substance.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Patterson confirmed the individual was known to police and may have some right-wing anti-Muslim views which are being investigated by local District officers with the assistance of the SA Police State Protection Security Branch.
“Officers had interactions with him on two occasions earlier this year, however no action was taken at the time as there was insufficient evidence to take action,” he said.
“There are no indicators of any violence, or threats of violence, to any member of the community. I can reassure the public that at this point in time we have no information that this person was making a threat or was intending to use violence against anyone.”
