29 dead from seasonal flu in one year, says Oman’s Ministry of Health

Muscat: 29 people have died from the seasonal flu in Oman between July 2018 and June 2019, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH)

In a statement issued online, MOH said: "It should be noted that the statistics for the last season of the flu, which began in July 2018 and lasted until September 2019, has shown that there were 2726 cases of the seasonal flu, leading to 29 deaths."

According to the ministry, 291 people got the seasonal flu in the last three months, which is much lower than the 2018 figure.

"From June to September 2019, there were 291 cases of the flu in Oman, compared to 992 cases in the same period of 2018," the statement added.

The ministry also said that “Oman has cases of the seasonal flu all year round because of its geographic position, but its activity begins each september and can last until May, but the most active period of the flu is December.”

"The Ministry of Health continues its work to monitor and prevent cases of the seadonal flu all year long, and also speaks to the authorities and experts about updates," the statement added.

While this year's cases of the flu are lower than usual expected rates, "there was an increase in infection cases in some Governorates such as Dhofar, South Al Sharqiyah, and Musandam in September 2019. This may be due to the length of the Khareef season and rainfall over Oman, as well as the start of the school year, which helps the virus spread."
