Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has rubbished rumours spreading on social media about the death of a civilian bystander at Muttrah Corniche.
False reports about the death of a bystander on Tuesday night at Muttrah Corniche as Oman felt the effects of Tropical Cyclone Kyarr have been doing the rounds on social media.
An official from ROP said that, “There is no truth in the rumours being spread on social media about the death of a bystander on Tuesday night. Apparently someone has been spreading false reports about the death of a bystander after they fell off of a cement block in Muttrah Corniche because of the high waves and sea tide as a result of Tropical Cyclone Kyarr.”
The ROP official confirmed that no deaths have been recorded in all the governorates and wilayat of the Sultanate since the beginning of the tropical Kyarr.
He also denounced that citizens' indifference regarding the strength of the waves and tide of sea, as many were observed playing in the breakwater and swimming in the tidal sea and beaches. He said they were not taking into account the risks involved.
“The sub-committees for ambulance and civil defence in coordination with all competent and local authorities are following the situation in all governorates affected by Kyarr,” he added.
He also said that: “Three families were provided with shelter in Saham — in apartments — and some were transferred to a residential complex. Even Ja'alan Bani Bu Ali — especially in the village of Sihon — has provided a apartment to a family, who had to evacuate their home due to the presence of unstable substances.“
To sum up, the police official said: "Citizens and residents should take advice and guidance provided by the competent authorities into consideration and follow up the latest updates related to Kyarr from reliable official sources only. They must help in protecting themselves from the dangers of Kyarr for the sake of their own safety and their properties, and should not risk their lives and that of others.”
