Muscat: The preparation for Oman’s largest educational event, the Times of Oman Inter School Quiz, is underway in full swing.
Scheduled to take place in the second half of November, the event for the first time ever will also host an Arabic Quiz by Times of Oman’s sister paper, Al Shabiba, and will be called ‘Musabakat Bayn Madaris’.
In this regard, Orbit Events Management, the organising company, reached out to more than 48 Omani and bilingual private schools and invited their principals, teachers, superintendents and coordinators for a high tea at Crowne Plaza, Qurum, to tell them all about the Arabic quiz.
“We realised that being the first ever Arabic quiz, there might be several questions that school authorities need answers for. This meeting we hoped will help answer them, provide them with clarity and motivate participation from their respective schools,” said Ramesh Gopalan, CEO of Orbit Events, the organisation that has come on board to manage the entire event in collaboration with Times of Oman. “We are delighted with the response we had when representatives from many schools turned up to our invitation. They had several pertinent doubts and all have been answered,” he added.
The Arabic Quiz Master Faiz Ibrahim Al Mamari made the presentation to the delegates and filled the room with his natural wit and humour.
“It was so good to see such a strong response. It demonstrates the genuine interest that these schools have in the overall development of their students. I am very confident that Arabic quiz will draw thousands of students to participate,” he said.
“I am looking forward to the finals and hope to see the City Amphitheatre full of supportive parents, teachers and eager-to-learn students who will come to encourage the finalists,” he added.
Many teachers expressed their desire to make quizzing a regular part of the curriculum in their school. “I think quizzing really brings out the best from a student because it prepares them for any question at any time. It is not one textbook based test. Active and regular participation in quizzes will surely enhance their overall personality, presence of mind and intelligence,” one of the teachers said. Participation is free for all students for both English and Arabic quiz.
“We would like to see as many participants in this quiz as possible. We hope to keep participation free helps,” said Ramesh Gopalan in this matter. It is to be noted that the Quiz Mega Prelims will be held on 21 November, and the venues and respective timings for the junior and senior batches will be conveyed to those who qualify from the first prelims. The Finals of the Times of Oman English Quiz will be on 22 November, and the finals of Al Shabiba Arabic Quiz will be held on 23 November at the City Amphitheatre.
