Muscat: Expatriates of Indian origin in Oman have been given until 30 June 2020 to extend their Overseas Citizens of India card, should they be expiring soon, and can travel on their cards until then.
However, they need to carry with them the old passport mentioned in their OCI cards, as well as their new passports to verify the proof of their identity.
According to a notice issued by the Embassy of India in Muscat, “this is to inform that the Government of India has decided to grant a temporary relaxation until 30 June 2020, in the following cases: In case an OCI card holder below the age of 20 years has not gotten the OCI re-issued on change of passport, he/she may travel on the strength of his/her existing OCI card bearing the old passport number subject to the condition that along with the new passport, the OCI card holder carried the old passport mentioned in the OCI card.”
The embassy added: “In case the OCI card holder has attained 50 years of age, and has gotten his/her passport renewed subsequently, but has not gotten his/her OCI card re-issued on renewal of the passport, he/she may travel on the strength of the existing OCI card along with the old and new passports. However, it is advised that OCI cardholders take steps to comply with the existing guidelines and renew their OCI cards as required by the rules.”
The guidelines for the renewal of OCI cards, according to the embassy, are:
“OCI cards need to be reissued each time a new passport is acquired by the cardholder, up to the age of 20 years, and an OCI card is to be re-issued once on acquiring a new passport after completing 50 years of age. The reissuance of an OCI card is not required each time a passport is issued to a card holder between the ages of 21 and 50 years of age.”
