England frustrated by Pakistan's resilience

Southampton: Abid Ali and Azhar Ali provided staunch resistance as Pakistan batted through a rain-affected fourth day for the loss of just two wickets.
Abid eventually fell late in the day for a 162-ball 42, becoming James Anderson's 599th Test wicket when he was pinned in front. However, Babar Azam accompanied his captain through to the end of the day to leave Pakistan with eight wickets in hand as they try to save a draw after being made to follow on.
The opening pair of Shan Masood and Abid Ali managed to survive through the shortened first session – aided by a drop by wicket-keeper Jos Buttler off Anderson – as the weather took a turn for the worse, forcing play to be suspended.
After some heavy rain fell during the interval, play was able to resume three hours later, and England got their breakthrough soon after. Masood shouldered arms to a ball from Stuart Broad which was adjudged by the umpire to have been hitting off stump, and he had to go for 18 having put on 49 runs for the first wicket in 23.4 overs.
Azhar picked up where he left off in the first innings as he joined forces with opener Abid to further frustrate England's bowlers. While the run-rate was kept in check, the hosts struggled to threaten either batsman with any regularity as the pair added another 39 runs, but more importantly batted through another 26.1 overs before Anderson struck.
At various points through the day England resorted to short-pitched bowling in an effort to make something happen, with Jofra Archer and then Broad trying the tactic, with even Anderson not shying away from dropping short through the day.
Babar and Azhar managed to get through a further 6.1 overs before bad light and then more rain brought the end of the day, taking the score to 100/2 at stumps.
