Muscat: The Environment Authority has started the second phase of cultivating mangroves in Al Wusta Governorate.
A statement issued online said: "The Environment Authority carried out the second phase of planting mangroves, where the specialists of the Marine Environment Conservation Department, in coordination with the Environment Department in Al Wusta Governorate, cultivated 900 seedlings of mangrove tree seedlings in Khor Al Ghawi in the Wilayat of Al-Jazer in Al Wusta governorate."
Badr bin Saif Al Busaidi, a specialist in nature reserves, stressed the importance of this natural resource and its close association with humans and its impact on the economic and social aspects, as well as its significant contribution to enriching biodiversity and creating a balanced environmental system that is complementary to the surrounding ecosystems.
"The mangrove seedlings cultivation project began in 2001 and until today, about 687,000 mangrove seedlings have been cultivated in 32 sites. In addition to the fact that mangrove environments are one of the most complex systems, as it was discovered recently that they are one of the largest ecosystems that store high amounts of carbon circulating in the atmosphere by human practices."
