Oman Human Rights Commission participates in Jordan meeting

Muscat: A delegation from the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) led by the Vice-Chairman, Saud bin Saleh Al-Mawali, participated in the Roundtable Dialogue on the United Nations Common Position on Detention in Jordan.

During the meeting, they discussed the issue of overcrowding in jails and reduction of detention centres (prisons) in the Middle East and North Africa region. The event was organised by the Regional Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for the Middle East and North Africa and the International Organisation for Penal Reform, in partnership with the Public Security Directorate in Jordan.

The dialogue sessions included a review of the United Nations system's common position on detention and the impact of overcrowding in prisons on human rights, presenting the experiences of a number of states, demonstrating the role of parties, and proposed solutions for the promotion of human rights.

Abdulaziz bin Ali Al-Saadi, Director of the Legal Affairs Department of the Oman Human Rights Commission was also a member of the delegation.
