MUSCAT: Oman’s Al Yazan Al Shamsi brought pride to the Sultanate after winning the bronze medal in the 800 metres at the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain on Saturday, securing Oman’s first podium finish at the ongoing continental event.
Al Shamsi clocked 1:58.79 minutes in a tightly contested race that saw him push hard against two Saudi athletes in the final stretch.
“My ambition was gold, but this bronze is an important step in my sporting career,” said the young athlete. “I dedicate this achievement to my beloved country, the Oman Olympic Committee, and my family. It motivates me to work harder and aim higher in the future.”
Teammate Raed Al Balushi finished fifth in the 200m with a time of 21.97 seconds, while taekwondo players Al Moatasem Al Maskari and Qaboos Al Balushi fought valiantly in their respective bouts, with Al Maskari reaching the round of 16.
National coach Ahmed Al Siyabi praised Al Shamsi’s effort, calling the result “a reward for hard work and belief.” He added that the athlete’s limited experience in continental competition slightly affected his tactics but noted that “he has a bright future ahead.”
Retired Brigadier Saeed bin Mohammed Al Hajri, Deputy head of the mission hailed the medal as “a proud moment for Omani sport and a sign of what’s to come.”
The Asian Youth Games, hosted by Bahrain from October 22–31, feature more than 5,000 athletes from 45 nations competing across 24 sports.
