UN Envoy lauds Oman's role in facilitating Yemen prisoner exchange agreement

Muscat: Hans Grundberg, the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy to Yemen, has expressed his profound gratitude to the Sultanate of Oman for hosting the pivotal negotiations in Muscat that culminated in the signing of a prisoner exchange agreement for Yemen.

In a statement issued by his office, the Envoy lauded Oman's diplomatic efforts, underscoring the critical humanitarian significance of the deal.

The statement confirmed that the conflict parties concluded intensive discussions held in Oman from 9 to 23 December, successfully reaching an agreement on a new phase for the release of conflict-related detainees from all sides.

Commenting on the outcome, the UN Special Envoy stated, "Securing an agreement on another phase of detainee releases is a positive and crucial step that will help alleviate the immense suffering of detainees and their families across Yemen."

He further emphasised that the "effective implementation of the agreement will require the sustained engagement and cooperation of the parties, coordinated regional support, and continuous efforts to build on this progress toward securing further releases."

The Office of the UN Special Envoy reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to continuing its role in facilitating the implementation of the detainee exchange, in full accordance with established humanitarian principles.
