Oman Youth Handball Team concludes Asian Championship Campaign with Qatar Playoff

ZHUZHOU, China – Oman’s youth handball team will conclude its campaign at the 19th Asian Men's Youth Handball Championship on Saturday when it takes on Qatar in the playoff for ninth and tenth place, aiming to finish the tournament on a positive note after a challenging week of continental competition in Zhuzhou, China—the qualification event for the 2027 IHF Men's Youth World Championship.

Although Oman fell short of advancing to the main stage, Head of Delegation Amir Al Dughishi acknowledged the disappointment while emphasizing that the experience is part of a broader development project. "We thank God in every circumstance," Al Dughishi said. "Our ambition was to qualify and make the Omani fans proud. Everyone worked tirelessly, but success was not on our side this time." Looking ahead, he added, "This team represents the future of Omani handball. We have a clear plan to continue working with this group and strengthen it with younger talent. With continuity and patience, this generation can achieve far better results in future competitions." He also expressed appreciation to supporters, reaffirming the federation's commitment to building a stronger national youth programme.

Following the group stage, which featured demanding matches against Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong China, China, Bahrain, and Chinese Taipei, the coaching staff shifted focus to recovery, tactical adjustments, and correcting shortcomings.

Looking forward to the final challenge, team captain Saeed Al Hasani stated, "We have put the group stage behind us, and our full focus is now on Qatar. Our goal is to finish the championship with a strong performance that reflects our commitment." Abdulaziz Al Saifi noted that the tournament provided valuable experience against Asia's strongest teams, while goalkeeper Fahad Al Maashari emphasized the team's mental and physical growth. Hamed Al Mashaykhi added that the players are determined to fight until the final second against Qatar to give their fans something to celebrate.

Oman enters Saturday's encounter aiming to translate the lessons learned into an improved performance, showcasing resilience and signaling a bright future for Omani handball.
